“Others have seen what is and asked, ‘why?’
I have seen what could be and asked, ‘why not?'”
– Pablo Picasso
Why not say “yes” to the challenge? Why not say “yes” to the event? Why not say “yes” to pushing yourself?
It’s funny how certain moments in life can help can change our perspective or motivate us to do something. Age can be that moment, or a friend can be the catalyst, or even some kind of a health scare. For me, it seemed to be getting older and hitting age 35. In the CrossFit community, this is the age where you become a “masters athlete.” It just means you get to compete against other people your age. It also seemed to instigate saying “yes” to a variety of sports and opportunities.
It changed my perspective a bit by wanting to see what is possible at this age and how much “fitter” I can be. Whether it’s competing in CrossFit competitions, playing recreational softball and golf, participating in weightlifting competitions, or even signing up for a Spartan race, the question that has remained in the back of my mind is, “Why not?”
It is funny how often we sell ourselves short on what is possible or the moments we could experience. We let our own doubts, insecurities, and mindsets keep us from saying “yes” to the adventures available to us. This does not simply revolve around physical challenges; it can also be around challenges at work or in our personal lives.
This week, let’s look at the possibilities of the situations around us and ask ourselves, “Why not?” We might just find that we learn things about ourselves we never knew, and we may even have some fun along the way.
