“As important as it is to have a plan for doing work, it is perhaps more important to have a plan for rest, relaxation, self-care, and sleep.” – Akiroq Brost
Are you someone who has a hard time shutting things down and completely resting and relaxing? Many of us learn that we can work long hours, postpone sleep, push hard, and continue to grind until we reach whatever milestone we’re striving towards. We have calendars, to-do lists, reminders, and a feeling that there is always something to be done. This approach can help us achieve meaningful accomplishments, but it can also be a fine line that can lead to burnout, illness, and wearing ourselves thin.
This weekend is Labor Day weekend which dates back to the 19th century as a way to pay tribute to the workers who worked many hours and days throughout the year. One day may not seem like much over the course of a full year, but we can take this same mentality of intentionally taking a break from our busy lives to rest, relax, and take care of ourselves.
Let’s bring intentional moments to our day to rest and relax. It may be 5 minutes, an hour, or even a day that you can recharge. In order to push hard, we also have to recover hard. Let’s appreciate this Labor Day weekend, and let it be a reminder to all of us to plan rest, relaxation, self-care, and sleep into our schedules.
